How to Register for an Event Online
How do you register for an event online, and what happens next?
Registering for an event online usually takes a few minutes: you open the event's registration page, choose a ticket or session, fill in your details, pay if there is a fee and receive a confirmation. The steps are similar for a conference, a workshop, a webinar, a community fair or a fundraiser, even though the pages look different.
This guide is for the person registering. It covers what to have ready, the steps, what you should receive afterward, what to do when something goes wrong, and how to change or cancel. It ends with a short note for organizers on making registration easy, and links to the organizer-side guide on registration forms.

What you need before you start
Having a few things ready makes registration quicker and prevents the common reasons it fails or has to be redone.
The official registration link
Use the link on the organizer's own website or in an invitation you trust. If a page asks for more than you expect, check the address before you continue.
Your details
Name as it should appear on your badge, email address you check, phone number if requested and your organization and job title if relevant.
A payment method, if there is a fee
A card or other method the event accepts. If a code gives a discount, such as a member, student or speaker code, have it ready.
Your choices
Which ticket type, which days and sessions, whether you need meals, accessibility support or a language option, and whether you bring guests.
A reliable email address
Confirmations, tickets and updates go there. A work address that filters outside mail can lose them.
How to register for an event online, step by step
Most registration pages follow this order.
Open the event page and read the basics
Check the date, time and time zone, the location or link, the price and the refund or cancellation rules before you start.
Choose your ticket or registration type
Pick the type that fits you, such as general, member, student, VIP or virtual. If you are unsure which applies, ask the organizer before paying.
Select sessions or options
Some events let you choose sessions, workshops or days. If the sessions have limited seats, choose early.
Enter your details
Fill in the form carefully. A mistyped email is the most common reason people never get their confirmation.
Add guests, if allowed
Some events let you register others in the same order. Enter each person's name and email as the form asks.
Apply a code and pay
Enter any discount code, check the total and pay through the secure form. Look for a receipt on the screen.
Review and submit
Check your name, the dates, the ticket type and the total, then submit.
Save your confirmation
Keep the confirmation page, and look for the email within a few minutes. Save it where you can find it later.
What happens after you register
A good registration ends with something you can use. What you receive depends on the event, so read the confirmation carefully and ask the organizer about anything that is not there.
| What | What it is for | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Confirmation page and email | Proof that you are registered, with your ticket type and details | Save it, and check the details are correct |
| Receipt | Proof of payment, if you paid | Keep it for your expense or accounting records |
| Ticket or QR code | What you show or scan to check in at the event | Save it to your phone and keep a screenshot or printout |
| Calendar invitation or link | Date, time and the link to join an online event | Add it to your calendar and test the link before the day |
| Reminders and updates | Changes to the schedule, location or instructions | Read them, and add the organizer's address to your contacts |
| Attendee instructions | Parking, security, dress, what to bring or how to join | Read them a few days before the event |
If registration fails
Most registration problems have simple fixes. Work through them in order before you contact the organizer.
The page will not load or submit
Reload the page, try another browser or device and switch off any browser extension that blocks forms. Try on your phone if you started on a laptop.
Payment is declined
Check the card details and billing address, try another card and ask your bank if it blocked the payment. Do not pay twice if the first attempt may have gone through; check your email and your statement first.
No confirmation email
Wait a few minutes, check your junk or promotions folder, search for the event name and check that you typed your address correctly. If it is still missing, contact the organizer with your name and the time you registered.
The event is sold out
Ask whether there is a waitlist or a second session. Some organizers release tickets as people cancel.
Your code does not work
Check the spelling and the capital letters, the expiry date and whether the code applies to your ticket type, then ask the organizer.
You were charged but have no ticket
Keep the receipt and screenshot, and contact the organizer straight away. Payment questions can also go to your bank or card provider.
Changing or canceling your registration
Plans change. Look for the change and cancellation rules on the event page or in your confirmation before you need them, because they differ between events and, for paid events, may affect refunds.
Many registration systems include a link in the confirmation email to view or change a registration. Where there is none, reply to the confirmation or use the organizer's contact address, and give your name, the email you used and what you want to change.
Change your details
Correct a name, email or option as early as you can, especially if a badge or ticket is printed in advance.
Switch ticket type or session
Ask whether you can, and whether a price difference applies.
Transfer your place
If a colleague will go instead, ask whether transfers are allowed. Some events need the new person's details.
Cancel and ask about a refund
Check the refund deadline. Rules vary, so read what the organizer says rather than assuming.
Keep proof
Keep the email or message in which the organizer confirms the change or cancellation.
How registration differs by kind of event
The steps above hold for most events, but a few kinds have extra things to watch for. Knowing what to expect keeps you from registering for the wrong thing.
| Kind of event | What is different | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Conference or trade show | Several ticket types, sessions and sometimes workshops with limited seats | Which pass includes which sessions and days, and whether workshops are extra |
| Virtual event or webinar | A join link instead of a venue, and sometimes a replay | Time zone, how and when the link arrives, and whether a recording is offered |
| Hybrid event | A choice between in-person and virtual attendance | Which ticket you are choosing, and whether you can switch later |
| Free community event | No payment, but a headcount and sometimes a limit on places | Whether registration is needed to enter, and whether places are limited |
| Fundraiser or gala | A ticket plus donations, tables or guest names | What part of the price is a donation, and how seating or table groups are arranged |
| Workshop or class | Small groups and prerequisites | What to bring, what level it assumes and the cancellation deadline |

A note for organizers: make registration easy
If you run the event, most of the problems above can be prevented on your side. The detailed advice on form design is in the registration form guide; these are the points that matter most to the person registering.
Eventdex's event registration page describes personalized registration paths, session selection, ticketing and payments on a branded event page, automated emails, the ability to register, cancel, modify and refund attendees (with attendees able to do so themselves if you choose) and registration of walk-ins onsite. Its check-in page describes QR code check-in. An AI Agent chatbot is described as helping attendees with ticket types, discount codes and payment steps. Confirm the details for your event in a demo.
Keep the form short
Ask only for what you will use, and make most fields choices.

FAQ
How to Register for an Event Online: common questions
How do I register for an event online?
Open the official registration page, choose your ticket or sessions, enter your details, apply any code and pay if there is a fee, then submit and save the confirmation. Check your email for the confirmation and any ticket.
I registered but did not get a confirmation email. What should I do?
Check your junk and promotions folders, search for the event name and check that you typed your email address correctly. If it is still missing after a few minutes, contact the organizer with your name and the time you registered.
Can I change my registration?
Often yes, but it depends on the event. Look for a link in your confirmation email, or contact the organizer with your name, the email you used and the change you want. Do this early, especially if badges are printed ahead of time.
Can I get a refund if I cancel?
It depends on the organizer's refund rules, which should be on the event page or in your confirmation. Read them before you pay, and ask the organizer if they are unclear.
Do I need to print my ticket or QR code?
Follow your confirmation's instructions. Many events accept a QR code on your phone, and a screenshot or printout is a useful backup if your signal is weak at the venue.
