Square API Keys Guide

A comprehensive guide to accessing your Square API credentials including Application ID, Access Token, and Location ID.

  1. Log in to your Square Account

Go to the Square sign-in page and log in with your Square account credentials.

  2. Navigate to the Developer Dashboard

Once logged in, look for "Apps" or "Developer" in your Square Dashboard. This will take you to the Developer Dashboard.

  3. Create or Select an Application

In the Developer Dashboard, you'll either need to create a new application or select an existing one. Applications are where your API credentials are managed.

Note: If creating a new application, you'll typically be prompted to name it and specify what you'll be building (e.g., "Accept payments").

  4. Access Your Credentials

Within the details page of your chosen application, look for a section called "Credentials" (or sometimes "OAuth" for access tokens).

    Here, you'll find:

    📱 Application ID

    This uniquely identifies your application.

    🔑 Access Token

This is crucial for authenticating your application's requests to the Square API.

    • Production Access Token: For live transactions
    • Sandbox Access Token: For testing in the Sandbox environment

💡 Tip: Make sure to select the correct environment (Production or Sandbox) at the top of the page to view the corresponding token. You might need to click "Show" to reveal the full token.

  5. Locate Your Location ID

    📍 Location ID

While not technically an "API key," the Location ID is essential for many Square API requests as payments and other actions are often tied to a specific business location. In your main Square Dashboard (not the Developer Dashboard), navigate to the "Locations" tab. Each of your business locations will have a unique Location ID displayed. Choose the relevant ID for your application's integration.

Important Security Reminders

  • 🔒 Treat your Access Token like a password

Do not share it or expose it in publicly accessible areas (e.g., client-side code).

  • 💾 Store credentials securely

Use environment variables or secure application settings to store your Application ID and Access Token in your application.

  • 👥 Limit access

Share these credentials only with team members who absolutely need them for development and maintenance.

  • 🔄 Regularly review

Periodically check your application settings and credentials to ensure they are up-to-date and secure.

By following these steps, you can successfully locate and manage the necessary API credentials for integrating your application with Square's services.
