Poker Strategy: Online Poker Player Development

From the letters I receive, there is a surprisingly large number of letters asking how to win at online poker. It amazes me how many people write and expect that there’s a simple way to score big at online poker rooms. The short answer is, there’s no way to just sign up at online casino or online poker site and expect to make big money.

The converse is true; expect to lose money. It’s called gambling for a reason; whether you play online or not it’s still poker. It doesn’t matter if texas hold’em poker or stud or even pineapple poker is your preferred variation. Making money – especially at a professional level – is difficult, to say the least.

Don’t fret, however; with hard work and diligence, you can make money playing online poker. The first step is to find an online poker site where you can play for free. Resist the temptation to put down any money yet; if the online poker site has a signup bonus, then take advantage of that but don’t play for real money just yet.

Practice playing for free to get a feel for whatever version of online poker you want to play. Play as aggressively as you want; learn the pitfalls of reckless play and see what it takes to bluff. You can even sit and watch other players to anticipate their hands, learn from the skilled, and understand the errors of the troglodytes.

People in the play money rooms tend to be much more aggressive and careless than their counterparts parts in the real money poker rooms. This is to be expected; real money is more valuable to most people. Keep this in mind and don’t get caught up in the sometimes idiotic poker playing and wagering. These people who play so recklessly mostly lose; sometimes they win so be careful not to be taken along for the ride.

It never hurts to read poker books by experts. To find a well reputable book, check out amazon or just search for online poker book reviews. There is a short-list of excellent poker books surrounded by an ever-extrapolating mass of crap “online poker strategy” books. Read and re-read the books until you can recite the strategy and values by memory. Once you’ve memorized the strategy, apply it to your game. This is much harder than memorization; poker strategy application is an art and like anything else is much more difficult to actually do it rather than just recite it.

Continue playing in the free online poker rooms. When you begin to win on a regular basis, it’s time to step up to the real tables. But don’t get carried away; you’re still new at this online poker thing.
Again, expect to lose money playing poker. Always keep your poker money separate from your living expenses and savings. Being a homeless poker play isn’t as glamorous as it sounds.
At this point, you should be able to start winning with some regularity. Don’t get overconfident or frustrated if you win or lose. This is all part of the normal fluctuations of poker. And, remember, it’s not about the number of pots you win or lose, it’s the size of the pot. One massive pot win is worth loads more than a few small pots.
Good luck in your online poker playing adventure.

While playing for free in online casinos is fun, it’s not really gambling. If you want to experience everything an online casino has to offer, try playing 3-card poker for real money. You’ll feel an incomparable and unforgettable thrill the minute you place that very first bet.
